Harlingen CISD raises awareness of dyslexia through annual conference

HARLINGEN, TX (ValleyCentral) – Harlingen CISD makes sure its teachers, students, parents and the community are aware of the signs of dyslexia.

“Dyslexia is a disability of neurological origin, which means it involves the brain and how the brain functions when it reads,” said Anaiz Sosa, HCISD dyslexia teacher and college-certified language therapist.

Sosa explained that other issues that arise with dyslexia are difficulties with writing, spelling, and phonological awareness.

She said signs of dyslexia can be seen in children as young as three and explained that it is important to remedy dyslexia at a younger age as it becomes more difficult as the child grows older. .

“You may start to notice different characteristics like delayed speech, the way they change sounds and letters when they speak,” Sosa said.

Jennifer Esparza, also a dyslexia teacher and certified academic language therapist at HCISD, said she also helps teachers make a plan for their students.

“We are working on reading, spelling and writing, and we also provide multisensory instruction to students,” Esparza said.

She explained that she has seen many children achieve success through the school district’s dyslexia programs.

“Fast forward two years, they read short sentences, paragraphs and understand what they are reading,” Esparza said.

HCISD will be hosting its annual dyslexia conference on October 2nd at the Dr. Cano Freshman Academy from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

HCISD / 504 dyslexia specialist Dr Shannon Reyna explained that the first conference was held in 2019.

She said the school district held parent meetings for dyslexia awareness before the conferences.

Dr Reyna said this year’s conference will have a guest speaker, Dr Cherly Chase, who will speak about the socio-emotional part of dyslexia.

“It’s important to know what they think of themselves and how they navigate, as well as the learning differences they have. Thirty percent of our dyslexic students are twice as exceptional, which means they are gifted, ”said Dr. Reyna.
