1. Origins

a. This scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to a doctoral student who undertakes research on the development of an advanced classification tool for eye diseases in cattle using artificial intelligence modeling.

b. The research is to be conducted on the University of Sydney Camden campus and requires animal handling, fieldwork and a willingness to travel.

vs. This scholarship is funded by the University of Sydney and follows the collaborative arrangement for funding and conducting R&D projects between MLA Donor Company Limited (MDC) and Meat & Livestock Australia Limited and the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. The scholarship is offered on the condition that the candidate has an unconditional offer of admission or is currently enrolled to study full-time in a PhD at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney Faculty of Science.

b. Applicants should be willing to conduct research on the development of artificial intelligence using the diagnosis of eye disease in cattle. This position will also require animal handling and field work.

vs. Applicants must be a domestic student.

D. Applicants should also hold at least one of the following degrees in a quantitative discipline (i.e. veterinary epidemiology, statistical genetics, computer science or bioinformatics):
I. a specialized baccalaureate (first class or upper second class) or the equivalent,
II. Master with an important research component.

e. The candidate should have a solid experience or interest in learning image processing, data science and machine learning.

F. Applicants must hold a valid NSW driver’s license and be prepared to travel.

3. Selection criteria

a. The successful candidate will receive the scholarship on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. field of study and / or research proposal
III. curriculum vitae and
IV. previous research experience.
V. personal statement

b. The successful candidate will receive the scholarship upon appointment of the relevant research director (s) or their designated delegates.

4. Value

a. The scholarship will provide a stipend of $ 35,000 (fixed rate) per year up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

b. Study periods already undertaken with a view to the degree before the start of the scholarship will be deducted from the maximum duration of the scholarship, excluding any potential extension period.

vs. The fellowship must begin within the relevant research period in which it is offered and cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of ​​research without prior approval.

D. No other amount is payable.

e. The scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding.

5. Eligibility for progression

a. Progress is subject to participation and successful completion of the annual progress review.

6. Holiday provisions

a. The scholarship recipient receives up to 20 working days of recess each year from the scholarship and this can be accumulated. However, the student will forfeit any unused leave remaining when the scholarship is over or terminated. The recess leave does not result in an overload of the leave and the agreement of the supervisor must be obtained before the leave is taken.

b. The scholarship recipient may take up to 10 working days of sick leave each year of the scholarship and this can be accumulated during the term of the scholarship. Students with family responsibilities, caring for sick children or relatives, or victims of domestic violence, can convert up to five days of their entitlement to annual sick leave into caregiver leave upon presentation of a or several medical certificates. Students taking sick leave should notify their supervisor as soon as possible.

7. Research abroad

a. The scholarship recipient cannot normally conduct research abroad within the first six months of award.

b. The beneficiary is required to follow official advice from the University and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Travel in light of travel restrictions due to Covid-19.

vs. The fellow may perform up to 12 months of research outside of Australia. Approval must be sought from the student’s supervisor, school and faculty director via an application for the post-graduate degree by the Center for Research Administration (HDRAC) and will only be granted if the research is essential for graduation.

D. In addition, additional approval may be required, as outlined in the University of Sydney’s Covid-19 2021 response plan.

e. All research periods abroad are cumulative and will be taken into account for the application of a student. Students must remain enrolled full-time at the University and receive approval to count the time of absence.

F. If the Recipient conducts research outside of Australia, the Recipient acknowledges that the University of Sydney is not responsible for any costs incurred. This includes, but is not limited to: travel and transfer costs (unless otherwise specified in section 4 (Value) of this scholarship in the amount stated), delays due to travel restrictions or state quarantine requirements and / or federal upon their return to Australia.

8. Suspension

a. The scholarship holder cannot suspend his scholarship within the first six months of study, unless a legislative provision applies.

b. The scholarship recipient may request up to 12 months suspension of the scholarship for any reason during the term of the scholarship. The periods of suspension of the scholarship are cumulative and failure to resume studies after the suspension will result in the termination of the scholarship. Approval must be requested from the student director, the school director and the faculty through an application for the Higher Diploma by Research Administration Center (HDRAC). The study periods leading to the diploma during the suspension of the scholarship will be deducted from the maximum duration of the scholarship.

9. Changes in registration

a. The scholarship recipient must promptly inform HDRAC, MLA and their supervisor of any planned changes to their enrollment, including, but not limited to: attendance pattern, suspension, leave, withdrawal, transfer of course and the upgrading or downgrading of candidacy. If the scholarship holder does not give notice of the changes identified above, the University may demand reimbursement of any allowance overpaid.

10. Termination

a. The scholarship will be terminated:

I. in the event of the resignation or withdrawal of the holder of his research diploma,
II. when submitting the thesis or at the end of the scholarship,
III. if the beneficiary ceases to be a full-time student and has not obtained prior approval to hold the scholarship part-time,
IV. once the recipient has completed the maximum application for their degree in accordance with the 2011 policy of the University of Sydney 2011 Rule (Higher Degree Through Research),
V. whether the beneficiary receives an alternative primary allocation grant. In such circumstances, this scholarship will be terminated in favor of the alternative allocation scholarship when it is of higher value,
VI. if the beneficiary does not resume his studies at the end of an approved period of leave, or
VII. if the grantee ceases to meet the eligibility criteria specified for that scholarship (other than during a period in which the scholarship has been suspended or during an approved period of leave).

b. The scholarship may also be terminated by the University before this date if, in the opinion of the University:

I. the study program is not carried out competently and diligently or in accordance with the terms of this offer,
II. the student fails to maintain satisfactory progress, or
III. the student has committed a fault or other improper conduct.

vs. The scholarship will be suspended for the duration of any investigation / appeal process.

D. Once the scholarship is over, it will not be reinstated, except in the event of an error by the University.

11. Misconduct

a. If, during the scholarship, a student engages in misconduct or other inappropriate behavior (either during the scholarship or in connection with the student’s application and eligibility for the scholarship), who in the opinion from the University, justifies the recovery of the funds provided, the University may require the student to reimburse the payments made within the framework of the scholarship. Examples of such conduct include and are not limited to; academic dishonesty, lack of research within the meaning of the Code of Conduct for Research (for example, plagiarism in the proposal, realization or communication of research results, or failure to declare or manage a serious conflict of interest ), violation of the Code of Conduct for Students and misrepresentation in application documents or other documents associated with the scholarship.

b. The University may demand such reimbursement at any time during or after the period of the scholarship. In addition, by accepting this scholarship, the student agrees that all aspects of any investigation of misconduct in connection with this scholarship will be disclosed by the University to the funding body and / or any relevant professional body.

12. Intellectual property, confidentiality, publications and recognition

a. The recipient of this scholarship (the student) must complete the Student Actions Survey provided by the University of Sydney.

b. The student must provide a report describing any research conducted using the IP (intellectual property) project at the request of the MLA.

vs. The student must ensure that this compromises the MLA or MDC rights to the intellectual property of the project in any research or publication using the intellectual property of the project.

D. The student must ensure that the intellectual property of the project and any other confidential information remains confidential, unless required by law.

e. The student must ensure that permission is sought from the MLA to publish any confidential or IP information of the project at least 30 days prior to the proposed submission date for publication.

F. The student’s thesis may contain confidential information and intellectual property of the project, but there may be a restriction on publication of the thesis when reasonably necessary to protect confidential information or intellectual property of the project.

g. The student may be required to have any examiner of his thesis sign a confidential agreement to protect any confidential information used in the thesis.
