15 Morgan tennis players named ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athletes

BALTIMORE, Md. (July 12, 2021) – Morgan State’s men’s (7) and women’s (8) tennis teams had a total of 15 people listed among the all-varsity teams of the Men’s and Women’s Intervolunteer Tennis Association of the division I 2021 (ITA) organization announced on Monday.

The men’s team was represented Mikeal Carpenter, Oguzhan Ceylon, Cem Ertürk, Serhii Kharchev, Sebastien López, Rhajzon Rankins and Nihit rawal. The women’s team was represented by Ann Isabel I. Torrente, Ana-Lei Kalawe-Edouard, Averiana Mitchell, Stefania Moysiadi, Rose of Asmara, Dana Santiago, Guitar Upeniece and Jourdan Wallace.

“It’s an incredible achievement for our programs. I lead a very competitive group of young adults. They strive to be the best at everything they do,” Morgan head tennis coach said. State. Matthew Townes. “The recognition of ITA is just one testament to this quest for greatness at all levels for this group.”

“I am extremely proud of them and blessed to be a part of them. They did not let COVID or virtual learning affect the desired outcome. They made the appropriate adjustments for the situation assigned to them and did not made no apologies. ”

A total of 1,054 Division I male student-athletes have been named ITA athlete-scholars and 145 men’s tennis programs have received the All-Academic Team distinction.

In 2021, 1,505 Division I student-athletes were named ITA scholarship athletes and 210 women’s tennis programs received the All-Academic Team honor.

To obtain ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria:
1.) have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a scale of 4.00) for the current school year, and
2.) be registered on the establishment’s eligibility form

In addition to individual accolades, both Morgan State teams also won the ITA All-Academic Team Award.

The ITA All-Academic Team Award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or higher (on a scale of 4.00). All student-athletes must be listed on the institution’s eligibility form, and all scholarship recipients must count towards the team’s cumulative average for the current academic year.
